(CENTENNIAL)- Today, U.S. Senate Candidate Jane Norton reemphasized her support for a Balanced Budget Amendment at the national level. Norton endorsed Jim DeMint, Lindsey Graham, Tom Coburn, and John McCain’s call for a Balanced Budget Amendment and an Earmark Moratorium.
The amendment would require the federal government to balance its annual budget. If ratified the amendment would make it more difficult for Congress to increase the burden on the taxpayer by requiring a two-thirds majority vote to raise taxes.
“Forty-nine of the fifty states currently have a balanced budget requirement. As we continue to increase the deficit at an alarming rate, the need for a balanced budget amendment at the national level becomes essential.”
In addition to the Balanced Budget Amendment, the senators proposed an Earmark Moratorium, which prohibits the Senate from considering any legislation containing earmarks.
Earlier this year, Norton was the first Colorado Senate candidate to sign a no-earmarks pledge.
“The massive spending practices of Washington must come to end. The federal government is mortgaging the future of our grandchildren. A balanced budget amendment is a step in the right direction towards common sense leadership and reigning in out of control spending.”
